Amid the recent spate of cholera cases in Ogun State, residents along Quarry Road, Abeokuta South Local Government Area, have expressed concern over uncontrolled dumping of garbage along the road.
Residents of Quarry Road neighborhood expressed concern to the media on Monday, stressing that the trend of rising cholera cases could continue if immediate measures are not taken to curb massive dumping of waste.
Quarry Road, a key link connecting several towns to the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, witnessed an unfortunate sight: garbage strewn along the road divider and a large pile of garbage in front of a vacant lot.
Residents are concerned about the potential health risk posed by these unsightly piles of garbage, especially given the growing number of cholera cases in various parts of the state.
It is now widely accepted that the presence of waste in public spaces not only destroys the environment but also contributes significantly to the spread of disease.
,
residents strongly believe that garbage accumulation is a major contributor to the current rise in cholera cases across the state.
Spokesperson for the Ogun State Ministry of Environment, Rotimi Oduniyi, clarified that the government was not responsible for litter on the roads.
He pointed out that residents have set up places with trash cans where they can dispose of their garbage, but some people choose to dump garbage on the street out of sheer laziness.
Oduniyi, however, assured the public that efforts were being made to improve the situation and remove garbage from the streets. All residents must take responsibility for proper waste disposal and use designated areas.
By adopting these practices, we can maintain a cleaner environment and reduce the risk of disease transmission.
To solve this urgent problem, quick and decisive action is extremely important. Good waste management and regular waste collection are essential to maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
