An attack by assailants suspected to be Fulani herdsmen has left many people dead while a lot of others were critically injured in Asa-Iselu, a town in Yewa North, of Ogun State in south-western Nigeria.
The unfortunate attack happened in the dead of the night of Thursday 10 June 2010.
“The attack happened in the early hours of Thursday morning when many people fell into a deep sleep. These villains really took us by surprise because we hadn’t prepared for an attack in that time.
Report says the village headman Ajanaku Adelani was hit hard when he lost his two sons Adedeji and Olaitan Ajanaku.
“It’s an experience we will remember for a long time because harmless people were helpless amidst these monsters that came to maim and kill,” Real Points Report newspaper quoted an anonymous eyewitness.
It was also found that one of the most important personalities in the community, Chief Akin Odule, was killed. Another prominent figure in the town, Chief Adegbite Ikuesan and several indigenes, including Olusola Solomon Osagie, who suffered heavy attack because the attacker suspected that he was gay.
This sexual orientation is considered a sin in Fulani herder religious practice and anyone who practices it is guilty of death.
Along with Osage, other people who were injured in the attack were Orisabunmi Aliyu, Kikelomo Taiwo, Saheed Akinkunmi, Majeed Oyedele, Fatima Akindele and many others.
Although the police could not provide official figures on the victims of the attack, it was gathered that more than 50 people were killed and more than 100 residents were injured.
“The police couldn’t help us because they too were powerless. The city police station is understaffed and understaffed. It was so sad. The police have received many reports from Fulani herders, but nothing has come of it,” the witness said.
