Nigeria is set to host representatives from 54 African nations and various continental Internet governance stakeholder blocs at the 2023 Africa Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF 2023) in Abuja, from September 18 to 21, 2023.
This 12th edition of the annual forum is being organised by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on behalf of the Federal Government and is scheduled to be held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, themed “Transforming Africa’s Digital Landscape: Empowering Inclusion, Security and Innovation”.
The AfIGF 2023 will provide a pivotal platform for meaningful dialogue and collaboration on Internet governance across diverse sectors and regional initiatives. Its mission is to advance digital connectivity, tackle Internet governance challenges and drive Africa’s empowerment through digital transformation.
The event will commence with the African Youth Internet Governance Forum from September 13 to 18, 2023, further highlighting the commitment to fostering inclusive Internet governance in Africa.
Kicking off the programme is the parliamentarian symposium, scheduled for September 18 to 19, 2023. During this session, parliament members from participating countries will convene for a roundtable discussion. The goal is to deepen their understanding of the legislature’s role and foster greater synergy among parliaments in addressing Internet governance in Africa.
As a crucial gathering of stakeholders and investors in Africa’s digital future, AfIGF 2023 promises to be a rare assemblage of key players from government, civil society, academia, the information and communications technology (ICT) sector and a diverse array of actors in the private sector. Their shared objective is to engage in discussions pivotal to the development, access, and governance of the Internet in Africa.
Structured with various gatherings including dialogues, workshops, panel sessions, symposia, and roundtables, AfIGF 2023 embodies a vibrant and inclusive platform. It convenes stakeholders from across the African continent and international partners to deliberate on matters shaping the future of Internet governance.
The event will feature focal sessions including digital inclusion and connectivity, cyber security and data protection, digital rights and freedom of expression, artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies, e-commerce and digital economy, and data governance and trust, among others.
Participants will also explore the 17 Sustainable Development Goals in the context of digital literacy and internet access. These discussions aim to accelerate development on the continent.
The commission’s director of public relations, Reuben Muoka highlighted that the event will feature high-ranking speakers, policymakers, industry experts, and thought leaders from across Africa and beyond. Their expertise and insights will shape actionable recommendations, informing policymaking and driving investments. Ultimately, the forum will chart the future of Internet governance in Africa, reshaping the continent’s digital landscape for a more inclusive and prosperous digital future.
